Brad Pitt on cancelled‘Ford v Ferrari’ movie with Tom Cruise

Brad Pitt is opening up about why the Ford v Ferrarifilm version he planned with Tom Cruise never made it to the big screen.

Speaking to The Nationalwhile promoting his new racing film F1, Pitt shared details about what caused the early version of the movie to stall, despite having Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski already on board.

“Tom and I, for a while there, were on Ford v Ferrariwith Joe [to direct]. This was about 10 years before the guys who actually made it – and made it a great movie,” Pitt said.

“What it came down to is that we both wanted to drive, and [Tom] wanted to play Shelby, and I wanted to play Ken Miles. And when Tom realized that Carroll Shelby would not be driving much in the movie, it didn’t come through.

So I’m not sure how that’s going to work [in a potential F1sequel], but we’ll give it a go. I’d love to.”

The version that did get made, directed by James Mangold and starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon, became a critical and commercial hit.

“I would want to drive again, selfishly speaking,” Pitt said about the possibility of a sequel to F1.

F1 is still the focus. It needs to be on Joshua Pierce – Damson Idris’s character – and the rest of the team fighting for a championship. Where does Sonny fit in? I’m not sure.

Sonny’s probably out on the Bonneville Salt Flats, setting speed records or something like that. So I’m not sure beyond that, just yet.”

Director Joseph Kosinski has hinted at even bigger plans for a potential sequel, floating the idea of bringing Cruise into the mix, possibly combining Pitt’s F1with Cruise’s classic NASCAR film Days of Thunder.

For now, Pitt says he’s just enjoying the response to F1and the way it’s bringing people together.

“Right now, I’m just pleased as punch that something like this can bring people together. That’s the power of this kind of cinema,” he said.

F1is currently playing in theaters across the country.
